Towards her Art (06 December 23)

Image
The parallel that had me teared up. Nevertheless started with us following Nabi from behind when she was walking to that sordid sculpture of her. She lost her agency, has no voice. But in the last episode, she went towards her art, following her heart that she chose to listen to. I realised that from the get go, even though NB has a lot of battles between head and feelings, she always tried in her capacity to be honest with herself. In the end, from ruins, Nabi transformed into a beautiful butterfly. Very sure of what she wants, such a brave brave journey. midnight_oat

Shot Analysis: Broken Mirror (15 August 22)

Image
This shot. Nabi, Jaeeon, two sculptures and shattered glass. The focus starts on NB then to the mirror, capturing the reflections. One sculpture is crouching mirroring NB who tries to bury her feelings. Another one is standing, hugging itself mirroring JE who is holding his feelings for NB. And shattered glass, reflecting their relationship that is growing and torn apart. This happens fast, I missed it on my first watch but it truly showed me again that Nevertheless is detailed and so thoughtful. midnight_oat

Students’ Artworks and their Meanings (29 January 22)

Image
Thought of making this thread because these elements beautifully captured the story, adding nuance and so much depth. It deserved more appreciation. Disclaimer: I'm not an artist, nor have I formally studied art. This is my personal interpretation of these artworks. This thread includes Nabi, Jaeon, Donghyeok, and Sol arts. The 4 pieces that illustrate Nabi's growth, which also go along with the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Caterpillar - chrysalis - butterfly. "Love" Her earliest work revolved around her view of love and also depicted her relationship with her ex at that time. Immersed of one another, but broken and beaten. The sculpture Wounded by the trauma from her mother and her past relationship, this sculpture tells Nabi’s current. Broken, no hands, no legs. She's full of doubts and lost in life. A vulnerable soul. She built herself again from scratch. Still shattered, but she has voices now, more power, and more force. Whether it’s a beautiful ending or th...

Ice-Cream and Sweetbitter (24 January 22)

Image
This small detail was neatly laced into their story. When JE left, NB almost bought the same ice cream but she changed her mind. Though while savouring it, she walked down the memory lane, the tunnel. Sweetbitter as the bgm fit perfectly to describe her feelings. The lyrics delivered Nabi's longing for JE and her conflicting thoughts of him. Nevertheless told stories not only by visuals but also through the lyrics and the details that were subtly presented throughout the show. midnight_oat in reply to mignonxminion

Jaeeon’s POV Through Lyrics (12 February 22)

Image
Ep1 JE POV through the lyrics. We're conditioned to view things within Nabi's perspective, hence Jaeeon's POV is often overlooked. Especially because we're not privy to his thoughts. But listening & watching again, the lyrics and the shots also represent JE's POV. When the night at the bar was almost over, NB and JE went outside to the alley for a smoke. "How's this night going to end?" is the question that's hanging in the air for both of them, and for us viewers too. But then, RIO - Sweetbitter starts playing in the background when NB is trying to light up the cigarette. The camera then points down from the higher angle showing NB's face and their hands, to JE's gaze, then an over-the-shoulder shot. All from JE's side. The shoulder shot is often used to show another character's perspective and the level of intimacy. That sequence establishes JE's POV towards NB at that moment. Right after that, the lyrics begin "Wil...
