Discussion: Cinematography, Characterisation, Perspective (25 July 21)

I really am curious how people who watch Nevertheless, process the show. Beyond the aesthetics of Song Kang and Han So Hee, there is this rich storytelling, intentful photography and cinematography, and great writing of these very flawed characters. Ahh agreed! Even though the general discourse seems to have gotten stuck on the red flag label that the Jae Eon character carries from the source material, I've had some really thoughtful conversations about the show's themes and inspired directorial choices. So good! Yes! I've always seen "the red flags'' as part of a bigger narrative and intentful characterisation of Jae-Eon. I guess it really depends on the lens you use to evaluate this series. If you watch it with a third-party lens prying into the lives of Na-Bi and Jae-Eon, then you'll get sucked into that perspective: Jae Eon as trouble for Na-Bi. But if you look at it using Na-Bi's lens, as I feel like the director intended it to be, you'll see...

Nabi has to Communicate (27 July 21)

Hard agree with this thread. People wish Nabi and Dohyuk to be the endgame because they think Nabi deserves a healthy relationship and while it's true, does Nabi really want that when she's the one to anticipate bad things and put her own walls to Jae-eon too? The biggest difference between the Webtoon and the drama is Jae-eon's character. They added more depth to him—his side of the coin, his conflicted feelings, his reason for being the way he is. In the Webtoon we get none of these, and that's why it's easier to hate Jae-eon there. It's not that I blame Nabi, but I know people that would prefer to stick and "find sparks" in toxic relationships and that's because they haven't sorted their feelings out that's rooted in loving themselves. Nabi has this problem, and it's not her fault. She never communicates how she likes, wants, or needs Jae-eon because she's afraid to get hurt—she has pride. She's afraid the same thing could ha...

Discussion: No Romanticisation (28 July 21)

Again, all the characters of Nevertheless need to face the consequences of their choices and are currently re-evaluating their approaches and learning the value of communication. What is this romanticisation that we speak of? The audience may, but not the show. doramaticbites True. The show clearly has not romanticized anything, at least for me. It may have been the female gaze and soft cinematography that they use whenever the romantic scenes play out in Nabi’s perspective that may have made it appear “romanticized”, but the story itself has never romanticized the characters’ toxic behaviors. If people think of it that way, then it means that the whole direction, cinematography, and scoring succeeded especially in how they wished to present the scenes from Nabi’s POV. The problem though arises in how some people won’t be able to see through that supposed “romantization” or lack the certain discernment to assess how effective cinematic storytelling (as a total package) is important in ...

Nabi Doesn’t Try to Change Jaeeon (28 July 21)

Thread ini mewakilkan opiniku, menurutku ceritanya cukup realistis asal mau liat dr sisi lain jg ga cuma dr satu sisi doang. Setiap orang punya alasan knp dia begitu, tinggal kitanya mau memahami apa engga Dan menurutku pelajarannya buat na bi bukan “km gabisa ngrubah seseorang” krn emg dr awal na bi ga berusaha buat ngrubah jaeon dia tau dr awal kl jaeon cuma mau fwban dan jaeon udh bilang dr awal, bahkan dia udh mutusin buat ninggalin jaeon tp jaeon yg ngejar lg Trs knp jaeon msh deketin cewe lg pas galauin na bi? Ya wajar, justru lebih realistis krn dia berubahnya pelan2 dia sadar sendiri tanpa dipaksa na bi/orang lain. Dia lg memproses apaan nih perasaan w? Kok aneh dah? Kok gapernah dah ngerasain kaya gini? Coba cek ah, salah kali?

Intersecting Love Stories (25 July 21)

Image
My thoughts on Nevertheless Ep 6. This was totally a filler episode. But we got blessed with the absolutely beautiful and calming environment of that small town where Nabi's aunt lives.  I really liked the showcasing of an alternate love story. But I think it's gonna end in vain. Let's first appreciate potato boy Dohyeok. Such a pure character. But somehow I can't help but feel that he's a misfit in this setup. The show has been sold to us as hyper realism and we've seen grey shades of most characters. That's what makes them intriguing. I would love to see Dohyeok and Nabi's love story unfold. The entire trope of childhood unrequited love. But with Jae eon and Nabi's story intersecting it seemed like an odd fit in the plot.  And one thing that most are forgetting to point out is the fact that Nabi is slightly misleading Dohyeok. She wasn't honest to him. I do realise that she came to her aunt's house to get her mind off of Jaeeon. But the den...

Dohyeok and Nabi’s Conflicting Ideologies (25 July 21)

While I love seeing healthy relationships flourish on screen, I feel like Nabi and Do Hyeok may not actually be the perfect fit. Their story follows the childhood friends trope. And I truly believe they should have gotten their dedicated show. But that show is not Nevertheless. Something that you may have missed is how different they are ideology wise. And yes, opposites do attract. But I'm just pointing out certain things that aren't congruent.  The one specific incident is the falling leaves incident. Do Hyeok is a die heart romantic and he tells Nabi to catch a falling leaf and make a wish. She caught it but she brushed it off. If you like someone, you end up doing things that you may not necessarily believe in. But Nabi didn't do that. She stood her ground and said she doesn't believe in these things. Which indicates that she doesn't feel the need to do things simply because they make Do Hyeok happy. Which he surely would. Hence, it's not a reciprocated rela...

Nabi and Jaeeon’s Areas for Growth (25 July 21)

Image
More being a story about an fboi changing for a girl, Nevertheless is showing us a story of two people whose fwb arrangement exposed areas where they need to grow in as individuals. Two people were running from their feelings in Ep 6, but let’s talk first about Nabi.   NB is the protagonist of the show and her growth is the one that is central to the story. It is not something that happens at a click of the finger - for as long as the show lasts, her journey will continue.  If you think about it, NB hasn't properly expressed her feelings for JE, but they’ve always been lurking beneath the surface. She wasn't able to take the stress of being in an open relationship (not knowing that JE doesn’t see anyone when he’s with her).   So she decides to end things. SA confirms it, when her situation with Chris is made as a comparison.   It would have been great if things really just ended there, but NB never stops liking JE. After JE talks to her on the couch, he resolves to c...
