Discussion: Dissecting Pain in Ep 7 and Ep 9 (25 January 23)

Image
I feel like I’ve asked this before but what’s the most painful episode of Nevertheless lol — Ep 9 certainly, but also this scene in Ep 7. I think what was so heartbreaking is that it demonstrated both the depth of their feelings for each other and also the depth of their communication challenges. You see some saw JE as asking for consent, but NB already consented to kissing him - and she was approaching him for more. He wasn't asking "Is it ok to continue kissing?" but "Is it ok for me to continue to pursue this thing between us because I'm all in.” And this is very consistent with his headspace after he faces his feelings in Ep 6. He wants to be with NB so he tries to convey it to her. He's bad at it, he's so bad at it. The boy is awful at spoken communication, but goddammit does he try! And at the same time he is trying to figure out how NB feels - he senses that she likes him, but he can't make sure without her actually saying it. But what she th...

What’s His is Hers (20 Sep 21)

Image
You see - With her ex was his was his, what was hers was his. She was so afraid to offend, so lacking in agency. Love was a minefield. With JE, what was his could be hers, if she wanted. You can do what you want with it, even throw it away. It's yours for the keeping, for the wearing, for the snuggling. Even when separation was brief, she could always have a part of him with her. Intimacy is tactile, olfactory. doramaticbites in response to nevertheele

Discussion: Kisses and Insecurity (02 August 21)

JE is also insecure of NB's feelings since she also hasn’t shown it to him. So for JE, skinship/kissing was a way to see how she felt for him and to go back to the calmer moments they used to have. You can tell both missed each other a lot, they both felt warmer? In comfort ♡ Exactly! It wasn't a kiss instead of talking, it's a kiss because talking failed. JE and NB still need to be better communicators. The kiss was bittersweet because it confirms mutual feelings, but if they do want a relationship, then they'll have to communicate more effectively. Yes!! I hope this makes them notice there's something more. I'm just scared that NB won't catch it and think JE only wants *that*, that's why I was glad he asked her permission. But I have no idea how this scene will move forward. He will know more from her but idk Nabi.  Yea I feel like NB does know on a level that it's not just abouts sex, but she's just protecting herself by not letting herself ...

Questioning the Professor (14 July 21)

Image
I have mixed feelings. On one hand I understand where prof is coming from, but to tell your student to make her decisions based on gossip is not quite a healthy mentality I feel. I don't think prof even knows for sure what is going on with JE. It's rumour-based. I think that all these voices are drowning out NB's ability to properly reflect on what she has with JE. In order for her to grow she'd need to make her decisions out of confidence, not fear and shame. Just one person, please, who would listen first, and not judge. doramaticbites

Discussion: No Romanticisation (28 July 21)

Again, all the characters of Nevertheless need to face the consequences of their choices and are currently re-evaluating their approaches and learning the value of communication. What is this romanticisation that we speak of? The audience may, but not the show. doramaticbites True. The show clearly has not romanticized anything, at least for me. It may have been the female gaze and soft cinematography that they use whenever the romantic scenes play out in Nabi’s perspective that may have made it appear “romanticized”, but the story itself has never romanticized the characters’ toxic behaviors. If people think of it that way, then it means that the whole direction, cinematography, and scoring succeeded especially in how they wished to present the scenes from Nabi’s POV. The problem though arises in how some people won’t be able to see through that supposed “romantization” or lack the certain discernment to assess how effective cinematic storytelling (as a total package) is important in ...

A Well-Structured Narrative (15 August 21)

Definitely have a lot to write, but I think firstly I have to say that Nevertheless Ep 9 shows why this show is actually very well written. There are one or two writing/pacing kinks. But overall, they stayed very consistent in characterisation and their journeys made sense, also the pacing of Ep 9 was good - They tied up 2 subplots in a way that was organic and felt true to their characters. Addressing their fears/weaknesses and having them get together in a way that didn't gloss over their issues.  All this while they've been having one of the main leads grow (JE), and break NB/JE's impasse at the end of Ep 9, in preparation for Ep 10. And they'll cap it with the ultimate and most important growth arc, the protagonist's NB's. doramaticbites

Tunnel of Reflection (14 August 21)

Image
The first time they walked together he noticed the butterfly she never washed away. "Didn't you want to see me again?" Her answer doesn't match her thoughts. But for him, it's, "I'm glad to see you again," before he walks away. The second time he reflects on his mother's words, realises he cannot love someone if he doesn't change the way he draws the line with people, with NB. And so he changes, tries not to let go, even when her answers don't match her thoughts. So now it seems he again is in the tunnel of reflection and decision. He finds herself at her place once more. Whatever happens, change is painful, wanting to be with someone, equally so. doramaticbites

Discussion: Not a Love Triangle (06 August 21)

Image
Posts like these piss me the hell off. It implies that Na Bi, me, and women in general are there to cater to men. That is not the point Nevertheless is making. It’s the opposite — it isn’t about what the men want or deserve, it’s about Na Bi and what she wants and deserves. She deserves, first and foremost, to be happy. She deserves a love that she can give back, a love that is equal, a love that can help her grow. If that love comes from herself, all the better. She is NOT some property whose value lies on how men see her. Fuck that. 18.2K reactions and 4.8K shares of people seeing this show as nothing more than some dumb girl stuck between two boys, with one choice better than the other. Do some introspection and get out of your Team Edward and Team Jacob phase, people. God. herlittledramas This thread yes. Actually the discourse in fandom about how just because a guy is "nice" to you, doesn't mean he deserves you has been going on for years. I don't know why the ta...

Lack of Adult Mentors (01 August 21)

Oh yesterday I thought it was all about pride but rewatching now I realise that the tragedy of their miscommunication (not lack of communication, miscommunication), is their vastly different perspectives on what is going on, and in the fact that they each have pieces of knowledge they aren't letting the other know. Without which things won't click as a whole puzzle. Tragic - the lack of adult mentors to guide them is really showing.    doramaticbites

Sunset Poster Analysis (25 January 22)

Image
I believe this was the first poster of Nevertheless posted on JTBC's ig. Such a bold choice and very creative. It clearly shows two students, intimate in how close they are standing. Her feet enclosed by his, slightly tilted, gives him a sense of steadiness, and hers a tad of uncertainty.  Plus the focus only on feet does make you think, so what are they doing, exactly? Then that orange of dusk, a moment between day and night, and being neither. Just like their ambiguous relationship.  It casts shadows that evoke a sense of mystery and then you read the text "I don't like it, but it's good." It perfectly encapsulates what is to come, but if you don't know a thing about the webtoon, it's a fascinating juxtaposition. doramaticbites

Sex and Agency I (23 December 21)

Image
Not only did this show that it was ok for a girl to have a sex dream, it was good because she was so clearly pleasured. Coming from a relationship where she had to pleasure someone else at the risk of her own enjoyment and safety, this is what NB longs for. But more than that, what she longs for becomes reality. And lying in his arms after, she finds herself thinking, it was good. Her wonder causes you to think that perhaps it was never really that good before. And then you realise that while  JE barges in and corners her for a kiss in her dream, in reality he was about consent, about waiting for the go ahead, about stopping to check if he could continue. Ep 2 is good in its own, but even better in light of Ep 3. doramaticbites

Nabi Adhered to Advice (26 August 21)

Image
One misconception about Nevertheless is that it teaches young women to go for toxic relationships without listening to advice. It actually ignores the fact that NB actually acted on the advice that two adult mentors gave her. Her professor and her aunt. What is ironic is that many people praised her prof for giving her the "hard truth" of taking responsibility for her life in Ep 4. But it is this same professor that tells NB to not overthink, and to like who she wants to like. Seeing NB grow, she understands that NB wasn't in a good place because she never owned what she wanted. She specifically looked forward to NB working with JE, because JE poured emotion freely in his art, while NB held back. The prof saw that they could make something beautiful when they combined their strengths, however, more than anything, she wanted NB to break free of the emotional barrier she placed on herself. NB's aunt tells her a similar thing. She encourages NB to not be afraid of wha...
