Significance of Jaeeon Being Scouted (10 August 21)

The scene of JE being scouted does a good job of telling the audience that he’s a talented artist (along with their TA’s comments about how lucky NB was to have him as an assistant) because the general audience (like myself) wouldn’t know good art if it slapped them in the face.  Art is subjective/personal but the recognition of JE’s talent from fellow artists and scouts highlights @doramaticbites point that NB’s ex’s art is not nearly as good as he thinks it is. It also helps the audience distinguish between the manipulative/exploitative nature of NB and her ex’s relationship vs the feelings JE has for. Their true character is expressed through their artistic creations and will hopefully help Nabi see that the two men are not as similar as she might believe. They both create “na-bi” (butterfly/na-bi the person) inspired art, but the intentions of the artist always shows their real intentions. Her ex’s art is straightforward, literally a sculpture of NB, but it tells us nothing abo...

Perceptiveness: Jaeeon vs Dohyuk (08 August 21)

The contrast between JE and DH's perceptiveness in regards to NB's feelings was made clear in this episode very well. There's a stark difference between the way they reacted, and it's interesting if you take into account the character stereotype they were initially boxed into. JE, supposedly the jerk and the asshole, backs off immediately after trying to pry for answers when he senses NB's growing discomfort toward the situation. He lets her draw the line and doesn't cross it to respect her space. So many instances during JE's visit to NB's aunt's. DH, already aware that NB's not in a good mood, still decides to move forward with his confession.   NB expresses she's not anywhere near ready for a relationship, and yet he's trying to convince her to consider his feelings during her emotional breakdown until the end. dream_no_24

Nabi Texting Parallels: Who She Really Wants (08 August 21)

Image
Parallel from Ep6 and Ep8. Whenever NB is about to take the brave step of calling or reaching out to JE, DH is there to put a halt to it. And then she gets distracted until she finally loses the courage to talk to JE. Frustrating, I know, but there’s more to it. It’s not because JE is so easily forgettable, or because NB is leading DH on. I think it’s because she’s scared — she’s absolutely terrified what it would mean if she reached out to him first. It’s not just a text or a phone call; it’s being vulnerable and open. She’s petrified of looking pathetic, of feeling like she’s some loser going after a guy who doesn’t like her. That’s how much her groomer of an ex gaslighted her. So when a distraction, in the name of DH, comes along, she happily goes with it. But the thing is, that’s all DH represents to her right now — a distraction. He gives her gifts and cooks her food and talks to her about his vlog. He’s easy to be with; simple and uncomplicated. But when he’s not around? It’s JE,...

Jaeeon's Subtle Character Development (08 August 21)

Image
JE telling Nabi a story about his life is a small but significant step in his growth. Past JE would've stopped at "My mom gave it to me for my birthday" but he gave away a snippet of his life without Nabi asking. JE then proceeded to tell Nabi the story of how he met HER, something that Nabi did not pick up on for two possible reasons: 1) She buried the details of her memory of that day 2) She wanted to believe JE was talking about some other woman Even when JE was not getting the response he's been meaning to get, he still continued his story -- even leaning forward to show his interest.  "It was snowing that day" JE notices every single thing when it comes to Nabi. Nabi did not pick on his hints, as expected, as she had trained herself to view JE as a flirt. On his end, JE did not seem to want to be forward with Nabi because he knows that he's walking on eggshells around her. Ep8 is the most talkative I have seen JE by far. JE has been trying his best ...

Jaeeon and Dohyuk’s Differences (13 August 21)

Image
It’s a meeting of two distinctly different personalities, both who have feelings for NB. While both are essentially rivals because of that fact, this scene is not a mutual confrontation. The differences between JE and DH are like night and day. DH is expressive, able to articulate whatever is on his mind, unable to hide his emotions, positive or negative. JE is considerably guarded, equally feeling but hiding behind questions and easy smiles. On that night JE and NB kiss, DH calls NB. NB looks at the call, then moves back to kiss JE. JE pulls away and asks her if it’s really okay. Like I’ve said before, he’s not simply asking, “Is it okay to kiss you?” The question is whether she is really ok not picking up the call. Is it ok to not respond to DH, because if he continues with NB, he won’t be able to stop. He already knows his feelings for her and is set to pursue her, but he wants to know what she actually wants. Though he has an inkling of NB’s feelings, he isn’t able to get any conc...
