Artist Ju Yujin in Nabi’s Room (30 November 23)

Image
Through every rewatch of Nevertheless comes a new discovery. This time is of an artist’s work. I have a favourite artist, her paintings stir up emotions that are familiar and comforting for me — Ju Yujin, ‘I thought i was alone’ — featured in Nabi’s room, a balance of warm & cool hues.  Most of Ju Yujin’s paintings focuses on colours and a single person in the middle. Art can be interpreted in different ways. To me, this painting could be a reflection of how Nabi sees herself. Blue & orange are complementary colours that each evoke opposite emotions but when put together creates such a beautiful image. It seems lost but hopeful, calm and kind, sad but happy. It reflects Nabi’s youth - but also ours as humans. We experience both the bad & good, life is like a wheel of emotions. Even when we face life alone, warmth & hope can be felt. Another of Ju Yujin’s paintings, this time displayed directly above Nabi’s bed! Another warm & cool hues, a balanced image. ...

Nabi’s Perspective, Insecurities, Growth (11 Jun 22)

Nabi’s Perspective, Insecurities, Growth Halfway through Nevertheless and am reminded of how Burning plays with perspective. Both are almost entirely told through a distrustful main character’s POV and the audience is left wondering what the truth is.  Does Jae-eon live up to his reputation? Did Ben kill those girls? Na-bi reads into his comments about butterflies as a metaphor for his views on women/sex.  In Burning Jong-su believes burning down greenhouses is a metaphor for murder. Or is the butterfly just a butterfly, and a greenhouse just a greenhouse?  Nevertheless starts out with Nabi’s agency completely robbed by her ex, yet when she meets someone so passive that every choice in the relationship is hers - she totally crumbles under the pressure.  I really do think this drama is a fascinating character study. Jae-eon is a perfect foil, a mirror in which Nabi can see her own decisions reflected back at her and she doesn’t like what she sees.  Her reaction t...

Nabi is not Weak (27 Apr 22)

Yoo Nabi is not a weak character thread : To start this, lemme remind you that Nabi knew what she was doing. She's aware from the start what she was getting into. Knowing what you do is not for self-blaming when things go wrong. "It's my fault for believing ..." Please change this perspective. But to remind you that you are smart enough to know what you want and to enjoy the journey, even when you do know how is the ending She did it cause she liked him. Is it wrong for wanting to be with someone you like? No!!! Not at all. Go with whoever you want And Nabi decided to end things because she knew she didn't get what she wanted. A label she's so smart to run away from him when she felt like didn't like it. Unlike her past relationship with her toxic ex, Nabi had full control on this relationship with Jae Eon. What Nabi wants Nabi gets. "She got swayed a lot by PJE" Give my girl some slack 🥺 She was dealing with trauma and learnt to know what she r...

Nabi Finally Asked (23 August 21)

Image
Why can't you ask?  Just as how you mustered up courage and kissed him, I want you to have the same courage to face your feelings and ASK HIM TO DATE YOU!!! Nabi please be honest with your feelings for Jaeeon. Nabi's tendency to avoid facing subjects that are close to her heart, is the same mechanism she has with her mother. Remember how her mom complained that she never went home despite it being close?! And considering the fact she's in her senior year, it means she never went home for years?? When the argument got heated between Nabi and Jaeeon, she looked him in the eyes, and a voice inside her chest spelled her true feelings for him "I like you", but once again she escaped from facing the absolute truth she knows very well "let's end this." Nabi’s history with negligence, is what shaped a big part of how she makes her choices, which is why she won't face her feelings and and be outspoken with Jaeeon.  No confronting means less pain or no pai...
