A Poetic Niche Kdrama (07 November 21)

Sometimes I still think that the brains behind Nevertheless forgot that what they were making wasn't an arthouse film but a series that would be shown to audiences with a more pop culture background.

It’s not only a fresh concept for K-drama, it is also very niche.

It’s understandable that fewer people saw its beauty. It would be difficult to change the minds of others who have formed strong opinions against it.

We can only share what we found beautiful about this show and hope that one day, others would see it too.

For the typical K-drama audience, it would come as unsettling, or a shock. For people who’ve had traumatic experiences about the uncertainties of young love, a bitter pill to swallow.

For literary majors, study material. For film practitioners, it is art.

To me, Nevertheless is an epiphany. It made me return to writing. It’s a story I wish I thought of and wrote, and a material I wish I saw when I was still studying literature, because the subtleties in character, dialogue, and storytelling are masterfully written and executed.

I may have jumped on this train because I was able to relate with Nabi, but the reason I’m still here is that its poetry spoke to me at a deeper level. I still find something to write about months later, and there are so many details waiting to be found and appreciated.
