Art Over Monologue (08 August 21)
One thing about this episode is NB and JE clearly take inspiration from each other when it comes to their art. After JE volunteers to be her assistant in Ep6, NB was able to finish her sculpture. Now, JE uses his memories, though they’re bittersweet, for his piece.
I used to wonder why we don’t have inner monologues for their art process, them being art students and all. We don’t hear about why NB chose to make the broken/being made sculpture. We don’t hear her make metaphors or reference to art and how she feels about it.
I would’ve thought it would’ve been better to show that aspect of their characters, to see these young artists be so passionate and dedicated. Your typical tortured artist trope. But now I want to think their creative process is reflective of their situation.
In the beginning, NB was stuck with her art. Her professor kept pressuring her about it because of the exchange program. But you see that whenever she’s with JE, there seems to be progress involved. In Ep1 when they stayed up all night in the studio, she sculpts.
NB is always presented as stuck in a rut when it comes to her art. Some would say it’s because she’s distracted by JE, but it seems to be quite the opposite. Whenever a turning point happens in their relationship, they’re always shown to be working on their pieces.
So I guess a monologue and several references aren’t needed after all. Just as their relationship progresses and regresses, so does their art process. Just like in real life. There’s no big point to this thread, I’m just rambling LOL.
