Cynicism Against Fate (08 August 21)

Re: NB and JE and their shared cynicism against fate -

Optimism, trust, belief in fate is not something that everyone has the privilege of having IMO. We are the people we are because of the hands we are dealt in life, and some hands are easier than others.

It's easy to say that we are the masters of your own fate, but that in and of itself requires a belief in faith, a lot of soul-searching and introspection that can only come from confronting your fears and faults.

We know that these two have lots of trouble confronting their past. The plot shows us how this is detrimental to their relationship on a romantic level but also their relationships with other people. They are terrible at communication and sharing their true feelings because of the walls that they put up. We see the stilted, frustrating outcome of this as their relationship breaks down. They don't believe in fate because of the vulnerability it requires.

To believe in fate would mean accepting that there are so many aspects of your life that are out of your control, opening them up to getting hurt again. We don't know much about their lives prior to what we've seen because they are both unable to share the parts of themselves that have been hurt before.

But from the little pieces that we've put together, we know that they both have unresolved pain and trauma that many would say was born from fate (JE living away from his mom, NB's mother neglecting her in favour of romantic relations). They have no control over these things (aka fate).

It's ultimately a defence mechanism that they use to protect themselves, but we're watching it crumble away because avoiding it doesn't mean it won't hurt you, it just prolongs the pain. The plot shows a really good job at showing this development, slowly, painfully and deeply!
