Nabi’s Perspective, Insecurities, Growth

Halfway through Nevertheless and am reminded of how Burning plays with perspective. Both are almost entirely told through a distrustful main character’s POV and the audience is left wondering what the truth is.

Does Jae-eon live up to his reputation? Did Ben kill those girls?

Na-bi reads into his comments about butterflies as a metaphor for his views on women/sex.

In Burning Jong-su believes burning down greenhouses is a metaphor for murder.

Or is the butterfly just a butterfly, and a greenhouse just a greenhouse?

Nevertheless starts out with Nabi’s agency completely robbed by her ex, yet when she meets someone so passive that every choice in the relationship is hers - she totally crumbles under the pressure.

I really do think this drama is a fascinating character study.

Jae-eon is a perfect foil, a mirror in which Nabi can see her own decisions reflected back at her and she doesn’t like what she sees.

Her reaction to him respecting her decision after she breaks up with him is a perfect example.

Nabi’s ex molded her perfectly smooth into the most compromising position you can imagine. Freed from that influence she struggles to mould herself.

Jae-eon gives her the keys to the relationship but she doesn’t know how to drive, sending them off a cliff instead.

Meeting JE’s mom and he has the same abandonment issues as NB! His manifests in aloofness and hers in insecurity - look at their reactions to the unpredictability of glaze.

Also the class on color theory and how two people can perceive the same color differently.

As painful as it was to see my poor Nabi broken all over the ground like that, it also gives her a fresh start to be honest with her emotions.

The glow up!!!

From a porcelain girl in a box to a free butterfly.
