Atonement and Nevertheless (18 July 23)

Image
“It wasn’t only wickedness and scheming that made people unhappy, it was confusion and misunderstanding; above all, it was the failure to grasp the simple truth that other people are as real as you.” “And only in a story could you enter these different minds and show how they had an equal value. That was the only moral a story need have.” -Ian McEwan, Atonement mignonxminion

A Lover's Discourse and Nevertheless (4 February 24)

Image
“(…) As a matter of fact, that cry is still a cry of love: “ I want to understand myself, to make myself understood, make myself known, be embraced; I want someone to take me with him.” That is what your cry means” -A Lover’s Discourse “The other's body was divided: on one side, the body proper--skin, eyes--tender, warm; and on the other side, the voice--abrupt, reserved, subject to fits of remoteness, a voice which did not give what the body gave. (…) “ -A Lover’s Discourse  “As a jealous man, I suffer four times over: because I am jealous, because I blame myself for being so, because I fear that my jealousy will wound the other, (…)” -A Lover’s Discourse (…) because I allow myself to be subject to a banality: I suffer from being excluded, from being aggressive, from being crazy, and from being common.” -A Lover’s Discourse  mignonxminion: https://x.com/mignonxminion/status/1753819753809170434?s=20 https://x.com/mignonxminion/status/1754163826617200800?s=20 https://x.com/mignonxmi

Towards her Art (06 December 23)

Image
The parallel that had me teared up. Nevertheless started with us following Nabi from behind when she was walking to that sordid sculpture of her. She lost her agency, has no voice. But in the last episode, she went towards her art, following her heart that she chose to listen to. I realised that from the get go, even though NB has a lot of battles between head and feelings, she always tried in her capacity to be honest with herself. In the end, from ruins, Nabi transformed into a beautiful butterfly. Very sure of what she wants, such a brave brave journey. midnight_oat

Artist Ju Yujin in Nabi’s Room (30 November 23)

Image
Through every rewatch of Nevertheless comes a new discovery. This time is of an artist’s work. I have a favourite artist, her paintings stir up emotions that are familiar and comforting for me — Ju Yujin, ‘I thought i was alone’ — featured in Nabi’s room, a balance of warm & cool hues.  Most of Ju Yujin’s paintings focuses on colours and a single person in the middle. Art can be interpreted in different ways. To me, this painting could be a reflection of how Nabi sees herself. Blue & orange are complementary colours that each evoke opposite emotions but when put together creates such a beautiful image. It seems lost but hopeful, calm and kind, sad but happy. It reflects Nabi’s youth - but also ours as humans. We experience both the bad & good, life is like a wheel of emotions. Even when we face life alone, warmth & hope can be felt. Another of Ju Yujin’s paintings, this time displayed directly above Nabi’s bed! Another warm & cool hues, a balanced image. mirroredm

An Ode to the Bittersweet Mess of Youth (23 June 23)

~If they lose their scales, they'll lose the patterns and colors on their wings, and won't be able to fly~ ~Happiness is a butterfly which, when pursued is always beyond our grasp, but if you sit quietly, might alight upon you~ (I'll give a spoiler warning when it's needed) Nevertheless appreciation depends on people's sensitivity, but it's an excellent drama for many reasons and I'm here to explain why. If you can't handle college students being messy, I wouldn't recommend this drama to you. If you like stories of complex feelings, thoughtful, realistic and mature dramas, then go ahead. The story was incredibly well thought-out, the characters were layered and the drama was visually very aesthetic too. Everything was beautifully executed, I love K-dramas because they give us beautiful productions like this, but Nevertheless is pretty much like no other because it was less scripted & more raw. It's deep, complex, artistic, subtle & sentim

Intimate Perspective (15 July 23)

Image
Nevertheless introduced Nabi and Jaeeon’s first meet from a really intimate perspective through its camera work. With extreme close-up shots and blurred background, it creates the right mood. How in a room full of people, it felt like they were the only ones there. It’s so immersive and reflective of the emotions felt between the two.  Also, I think it emphasises how their story was only meant for them two to share. Just like any other relationship, it’s best to go about it together first, but of course, sometimes the noise around us has its impact.  Thinking about what I love about nevertheless made me reminisce again over how beautiful the cinematography is especially paired with the soundtrack. It’s just so entrancing and completely draws you in every shot. mooonabi

Bittersweet - Nevertheless Review (21 October 22)

Image
A not so mainstream drama with a bittersweet storyline. A story that is more aligned to what happens in real life. It was interesting to watch how characters succumbed to their desires even though they knew it might be wrong. I have read so many negative reviews for this one but I actually don't understand why people find it not interesting. The main leads are beautiful together; their chemistry and the sexual tension throughout keeps you on edge. Even the side characters have a good story. Song Kang as Park Jae Eon played a bad boy which is not so common. We need to understand that not everything is white or black. People exist even in the grey belt. He never once disrespected or harmed Nabi. He never promised any commitment to her. It's all expectations. Maybe if they showed more of his past; we would've understood why he was afraid of commitment. He never received love; his mom left when he was 10. The lack of his past made him seem more toxic. He was wounded and could
